The 8th grade mock-trial team members from Casa Grande schools were bused to ASU for three hours of seminars in mock-trial techniques taught by lawyers, law professors, and a law student. Following the seminars, the visitors attended a panel discussion and Q&A about higher education and careers in law. The 8th graders then joined high school, college, law school, and attorney mentors for dinner and continued discussion.

The five Georgia Law Schools (Atlanta's John Marshall, Emory University, Georgia State University, Mercer University, and University of Georgia) joined together to host a DiscoverLaw Program to educate students of all ages and backgrounds about law school and the application process. The program included information on prelaw advisement, paying for law school, and legal careers; a question and answer panel with law school admissions professionals; and a mock law school class.
Anyone interested in law school was encouraged to attend, including college graduates; currently enrolled college, community college, or high school students; and their advisors and guests.

UCLA Law hosted a group of young women from the HerShe group, which prepares girls in foster care to successfully transition from adolescence to adult independence. The event exposed the participants to educational opportunities at UCLA, including programs that facilitate transitioning from community colleges to four-year institutions and into law school. The day included a tour of UCLA Law, a mock class taught by a law faculty member, panels with current students, and a writing exercise conducted by a current law student.

Through case analysis, discussion groups, and mentoring sessions, we provided students from King Chavez High School, a racially diverse school in San Diego, an overview of what it means to be a law student. Capital University Law School, in conjunction with the Law School Admission Council as part of the DiscoverLaw.org Months, hosted a pipeline program designed to engage racially and ethnically diverse high school and college students in the planning process for their future success in law school. We invited interested students to experience a mock law school class, learn tips on preparing for and navigating the law school admission process, and interact with current law students and practicing attorneys. Jump Start was a diversity-focused program hosted by C|M|LAW for local high school students. The event was a half-day conference that included topics on college and law school preparation. Students attending this event had the opportunity to hear a panel of diverse lawyers, have lunch with law students, and tour the law school facilities. The goal was for the students to obtain information about college and law school opportunities in order to promote higher education in general and to "jump start" a career interest in legal education in particular.

A Day in the Life of a Law Student

The Creighton University School of Law, in conjunction with the Creighton University Office of Undergraduate Admissions, organized a Law Exploration program. The program was held at Northwest High School, the Government and Law magnet school in Omaha, NE. We collaborated with two law students to present a program entitled "A Day in the Life of Zach (3L Law Student)" and "A Day in the Life of Emily (2L Law Student)." The program also included information regarding the undergraduate admission process.
Courthouse Tour and Mock Trial

Creighton University School of Law conducted Part II of our DiscoverLaw.org program. Students from Omaha's Northwest High School took a field trip to the Douglas County Courthouse. They received a tour of the courthouse, a history of the building, and a better understanding of what occurs on a daily basis at the courthouse.
Following the courthouse tours, lunch was provided to the students and other participants. Judge Vernon Daniels, Don Kleine (Douglas County Attorney), Brenda Beadle (Chief Deputy), and Nicole Goaley (the Chief Deputy of the Douglas County Attorney Juvenile Division), joined the students for lunch, as well as held an open forum with the students about their role in the justice system. Following the lunch and open forum, the students conducted their mock trial. Judge Daniels agreed to preside over the trial. Creighton law students were on hand to act as "shadows" for the students—in case they were unsure of their role.

East High School students were invited to take part in Drake Law School's third annual Law Student for a Day program to encourage diverse high school students to pursue a career in law. Students had the opportunity to see firsthand what it takes to succeed in law school and become an attorney. This half-day program allowed students to interact with law students and lawyers, as well as to learn about Tinker v. Des Moines School District, the ground breaking US Supreme Court case that all started in Des Moines.

Law Student for a Day was an event in which the Duke Law Black Law Students Association hosted 15 students from Mt. Zion High School in Durham, NC. The law students gave the high school students a tour of the law school; law professors interacted with the students; and law students conducted an informal Q&A session with the students over lunch. Topics covered during the Q&A session included law school admission, student life, and preparation.

FIU hosted the South Florida After-School All-Stars in a series of debate training seminars that culminated with a competition. Law students volunteered to facilitate the training workshops and encouraged participants to speak up. They also taught participants the skills needed to be competitive in a debate competition.

2012 Miami-Dade High School Mock Trial

FIU College of Law hosted the 2nd annual DiscoverLaw High School Mock Trial Invitational on April 4 and 5, 2012. Miami-Dade public high school teams were coached by volunteer law students. Student teams worked together to prepare their presentations from case materials provided by the FIU College of Law. Students played the roles of attorneys and witnesses based on the evidence and witness statements. Professional attorneys or judges served as the presiding judges. Teams were evaluated on their ability to make a logical, cohesive, and persuasive presentation.

2012 Minnesota Legal Education Awareness Program (LEAP)

This collaborative outreach event, featuring the four law schools in Minnesota (University of Minnesota Law School, Hamline University School of Law, University of St. Thomas School of Law—Minneapolis, and William Mitchell College of Law), was targeted toward high school students of color, urban youth, and other underrepresented populations in Minnesota to educate them on opportunities for future education and careers in law.
The half-day event was full of activities and presentations that provided students with insight into legal education, life as a law student, and careers in law. They participated in a mock law school class with a law school professor, interacted with current law students, and learned more about the steps necessary from high school to pursue a legal education.
We targeted various high schools in Minneapolis and St. Paul and provided reimbursements for transportation to the law school as well as lunch.

The Gonzaga Street Law club provided high school students in Spokane, WA, with an opportunity to learn about constitutional law from Gonzaga Law School students. The University of Louisville's Brandeis School of Law invited students interested in pursuing a law degree to attend our "Let's Talk Lunch" entitled Discover Law: Facts, Snacks, and Getting on Track. The event targeted racially and ethnically diverse students in their first and second year of college. At the Let's Talk Lunch program, participants were introduced to the law school admission process and how to successfully navigate the process. Next, Let's Talk Lunch participants had the opportunity to network with current law school students and learn from their experiences. During the program, students could register with DiscoverLaw.org. Lunch was provided for all students in attendance.

The University of Louisville's Brandeis School of Law invited students interested in pursuing a law degree to attend our prelaw day entitled Discover Law: Bridging the Gap Between College and Law. Although the event was open to the public, it focused primarily on high school students, as well as students in their first and second year of college (students enrolled at community colleges and at four-year institutions of higher education). Sessions at this one-day event included "How to Prepare for Law School," "Navigating the Admissions Process," and "How to Conquer the LSAT," as well as a current-student panel featuring students from the University of Louisville's Brandeis School of Law. Each session offered students tips and techniques on how to successfully prepare for law school and maneuver through the law school admission process. Participants also had the opportunity to connect with law school admission officers, faculty, and staff, as well as current students and alumni. Lunch was provided for all those in attendance. During lunch, students could register with DiscoverLaw.org.

Marquette University Law School (Office of Admissions and Office of Public Service), in partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools and the Milwaukee District Attorney's Office Safe Schools/Healthy Students Program, hosted a four-hour program for area high school students. This program targeted students of color from the Milwaukee area, primarily Milwaukee Public Schools.
Youth Law Day introduced students to the field of law through hands-on engagement. Prior to Youth Law Day, the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Program prepared students with an overview of the court system and trial procedure, including jury instruction. During the course of the day, students participated in a mock trial conducted by current Marquette law students in front of Judge Derek Mosley, MULaw '95. Each attendee served as a juror.
The program further introduced students to the road to law school—from high school to college to law school—including DiscoverLaw.org. The program also provided attendees the opportunity to engage with law students, lawyers, law school faculty, and administrators on topics that included their college and law school experiences and career aspirations.

Pathways to Law Program

The "Road to Law School" is often not straight, but a winding path of discovery. If successfully navigated, the journey to and through law school can lead a student to the most challenging, yet fulfilling and impactful work of his or her life. The Pathways to Law Program at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law was designed to arm those students at the beginning of this journey with an understanding of the crucial steps along that road and how to best position themselves academically and professionally to be competitive applicants, strong law students, and skilled attorneys.
The program included an Admissions and Financial Aid Overview; a Perspectives on Law School panel; a Careers in Law Speed-Networking session with attorneys representing private practice, business, government, and public interest careers; and a catered lunch. In addition, students received helpful resources from LSAT Test Preparatory Services, information on internship opportunities with legal employers primarily in Maryland and Washington, DC, and raffle giveaways.

Nebraska Law Hosts Project Achieve/Goodrich Scholars

The University of Nebraska College of Law was excited to host students from the Omaha Project Achieve/Goodrich Scholars program. Dean Susan Poser welcomed students to the Nebraska Law program, highlighting the first-year curriculum and the changes to the first-year curriculum effective for the fall 2012 entering class. Associate Dean Glenda Pierce introduced students to the law school experience through a legal analysis exercise on Hypothetical Homicides and by presenting perspectives of current Nebraska Law students on the law school process. Dean Pierce also hosted a discussion on financing law school and forms of financial aid. The various legal careers and opportunities for lawyers were featured in a presentation by Assistant Dean and Director of Career Services Tasha Everman. Programming concluded with a lunch hosted by current Nebraska Law faculty and students followed by tours of the law school.

The Roger Williams University's Bridge to Success Program (BTS) was a mentoring program that matched several Newport and Providence high school students with undergraduate university students to promote the development of academic, social, and emotional support systems for students in underresourced communities. As part of the program, the BTS students visited the law school to attend a mock class taught by a law professor and to hear from law school administrators about college preparation and the path to law school. In addition to a Q&A session, BTS students also had dinner with current RWU Law students for more informal conversations about interests in the law, the path to law school, the law school experience, and the legal community.
BTS Law Day was one of a series of three high school outreach events that will be hosted at the law school.
9th Annual Diversity Symposium Dinner

This event was designed to encourage high school and college students to pursue careers in the law. The Diversity Symposium Dinner brought together select high school, college, and law students; law school faculty and administrators; and practicing attorneys and judges to discuss the issues of diversity and the law. Each year there has been a focus to the discussions held at the dinner tables, and the younger students (high school and college) have been challenged to express their thoughts and ideas about these issues with guidance from the law students, law professors and administrators, attorneys, and judges. The issues discussed highlighted the importance of the law (and lawyers) to communities of color. By its very nature, this event allowed the high school and college students who attended to interact with diverse members of the bar and diverse law students, which is not an everyday occurrence in Rhode Island. The networking and exposure for the students who attended was invaluable. The law school partnered with the Thurgood Marshall Law Society of RI and the Roger Williams Law School Multicultural Law Student Association in the planning and organization of the event.

Discover Law Day was designed for diverse students to learn from current law students, admissions officers, alums, and faculty about how to choose a path as an undergraduate that will help them succeed. While all undergraduates were invited to attend Discover Law Day, the target audience was diverse freshmen and sophomores. The day consisted of a mock class as well as meet and greet with current students, along with a presentation on why the legal community needs more diverse lawyers.
Registration began at 3:45 pm, and the program started at 4:00 pm with a mock property class. After the mock class, students were taken to the Diversity Day Food Festival to meet and greet faculty and current law students.

This event was again centered around USD Law's annual Thurgood Marshall Program and featured a speaker, mock law class, law student panel discussion, Q&A with students and admissions and financial aid staff, light lunch, and tours of the School of Law.

Minority Pre-Law Conference

Stetson University College of Law, the Black Law Student Association (BLSA), and the Law School Admission Council joined together to host a DiscoverLaw Minority Youth Pre-Law Conference.
Each year we bring diverse middle and high school students from the Tampa Bay Academy of Hope and Middleton High School to Stetson Law's Tampa Law Center to recognize the importance of diversity in the legal field while allowing students the opportunity to meet with Stetson law students, professors, alumni, and admissions officers. This year's luncheon and conference educated Tampa Bay students on the importance of diversity in the legal field through a mock-trial workshop facilitated by Stetson's BLSA advocates. Local Tampa Bay student participants advocated a mock trial from beginning to end, including voir dire, opening statement, direct examination, cross examination, midtrial motions, and closing arguments. The program included the "Story of Us," an intimate series of monologues by BLSA students who shared their journey to law school and the challenges they faced along the way.
This was a great opportunity for diverse students to see that the road to law school is attainable. Students experienced firsthand the importance of being an advocate and also had the opportunity to work with law students, lawyers, and law professors that had similar backgrounds.

The Discover Law '12 High School Visit at SUNY Buffalo Law School gave the students the opportunity to meet current students, faculty, and alumni of the Law School. During the event, they attended a mock class, participated in a mock trial, and met members of the New York State Bar Association.

The Office of Enrollment and Student Services at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School was pleased to host "The Road to Law School," an LSAC DiscoverLaw.org event. We had students from all three Lansing high schools in attendance to learn more about the legal profession and the steps toward entering law school. The following topics were covered: the application process, the LSAT, possible careers, and the importance of character and fitness. There also was a mock Criminal Law class presentation. The high school students had the opportunity to interact with law school administrators and current law students. Lunch was provided.

Shadow Day

Thomas Jefferson School of Law hosted a Shadow Day in conjunction with the Law School Admission Council's DiscoverLaw.org Months. Conveniently scheduled during the school's Diversity Week, Shadow Day afforded San Diego–based high school students the opportunity to participate in the dissection of a mock trial (criminal case) problem and learn about the benefits of registering at DiscoverLaw.org. Following lunch, students were able to ask members of the school's Black Law Students Association and its La Raza Student Association questions about law school.

Thomas Jefferson School of Law (TJSL) hosted Law Day 2012 for students from Crawford High School's Law Academy in San Diego, one of the most diverse high schools in California. A representative from TJSL's admissions team visited Crawford High School to discuss law school and inform students about the benefits of registering at LSAC's DiscoverLaw.org. Crawford students then joined CLIMB (a student outreach group instituted by TJSL's Diversity Committee) for Law Day 2012 at the Thomas Jefferson campus. Following a presentation and discussion about immigration law, Crawford students interacted with TJSL law students and faculty during a reception and asked questions about going to law school.

See Yourself Here: U of T Law Open House

See Yourself Here provided high school, university, and mature students that come from disadvantaged backgrounds with an opportunity to learn about the law school admission process and the legal profession. Participants attended inspirational speaker sessions, educational workshops, and a networking reception with law students, alumni, and members of the legal community. See Yourself Here began as an initiative by the Black Law Students' Association to target black youth, and then expanded to include law students and participants from a broad range of equity-seeking communities that have historically been underrepresented in legal education and the profession.

Participants learned about law school issues, law school life, and the practice of law. This information was provided from the perspectives of students and alumni serving on panels. Participants were also able to take part in a mock law class and engage in a hands-on computer demonstration of technology-based legal research and websites for law school admission purposes. Lunch was provided and there was no cost to participate.

Discover Law Day was designed for juniors and seniors in high school and freshmen and sophomores in college. The day encouraged racially and ethnically diverse students to discover career opportunities in law and choose a path in undergraduate school to help them succeed. Students heard inspiring stories about law school from graduates, and had an opportunity to hear from a student panel and ask questions. A continental breakfast and lunch were provided.

Speaker Series: Reaching Out to St. Louis Public Schools

Current Black Law Students Association students partnered with faculty from local public schools to host a speaker series that discussed the following: the importance of seeking college scholarships, how to successfully transition into college life, and the importance of internships and developing soft skills. Law students shared their journey from high school to the present. This was a great opportunity for law students to have a positive impact on kids who were striving to do well, and who needed to see someone to whom they could relate, who was also striving to do well in an academic environment.
Planning for Your Future: The Time Is Now

This event introduced high school students to higher education (both undergraduate and law school). Our guests received an overview of getting into an undergraduate program, including information about available resources and information about available educational funding and waivers. Guests met with current undergraduate students who talked about their experiences and gave advice on transitioning and planning for the future. Then, attendees met students and faculty of color from the School of Law and had an opportunity to meet one-on-one to discuss their lives, their goals, and how to develop a plan for the future.

Minority Law Day Workshop

Western New England University hosted a workshop on minority and diversity issues with the application process for law school. This event was free and open to the public, but reservations were required. Lunch was provided.
The focus of the workshop was to educate minority and diversity students about the law school application process and to answer frequently asked questions. LGBT and nontraditional students also benefited from this program. Participants heard from current and former law students, as well as admissions professionals from the Western New England University School of Law, Boston University School of Law, New England Law | Boston, and University of Connecticut School of Law. The following topics were covered: résumés, letters of recommendation, personal statements, internships, and the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). In addition, a KAPLAN representative gave information on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and administered a free practice LSAT to participants.
Anyone interested in law school was encouraged to attend, regardless of where they were in the application process or where they were planning to apply.
