Date: Friday, February 24, 2017
Time: 10:00 am–1:30 pm
Location: University of Kansas School of Law
This event is specifically targeted toward local high school students of color and low-income students in the Lawrence, Topeka, and Kansas City areas. The idea is to encourage the students to pursue education (specifically law school) following high school. Every year we bus students from a number of schools to KU Law. The event starts with members of the Black Law Students Association meeting and greeting the students in the morning. Then we bring them into a classroom for a number of activities, one of which is a mock law school class with an activity called “Name the Tort.” A lawyer usually delivers a keynote speech about the benefits of law school and the importance of education, and we typically end with an address from the admission offices of KU, Washburn, and the local community college, Johnson County Community College, about financing college and law school and how to apply.
