Diversity Matters Award

Diversity Matters Award Receipients

Assistant Dean for Admissions Lisa Gear accepts the 2017 Diversity Matters Award on behalf of Southwestern Law School.

LSAC’s annual Diversity Matters Award is given to a law school that has demonstrated the highest level of outreach to underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, the LGBTQ community, Indigenous People of Canada, and others underrepresented in the legal profession.

We share a conviction that “diversity matters,” and we appreciate your dedication to strengthening the applicant pool by providing students, early in the pipeline, with the guidance they need to successfully enter law school and become members of the legal profession.

Contest Criteria

The contest runs from January 1 to April 30, in 2018 (and May 1 to April 30 each year thereafter). Winners are announced at the LSAC Annual Meeting and Educational Conference. We are looking for innovative approaches that tap into other pipelines, increase access to LSAC’s resources, and promote the importance of diversity in the legal profession. Criteria will include event attendance, overall use of funds, and the events’ focus on the following:

  • engagement and collaboration with local schools, colleges and universities, and community colleges with a focus on underrepresented groups
  • collaborative efforts with law firms, other law schools, and bar associations
  • promotion of LSAC’s diversity programs and resources
  • introduction of skills tested on the LSAT and in law school
  • mentorship opportunities
  • evaluation of the outcome and impact of the program on participants and community
  • publicizing of program and activities via print, digital, and social media platforms

What’s in it for you?

Finalists will be announced in May. First-, second-, and third-place winners will be announced at the LSAC Annual Meeting and Educational Conference, with trophies awarded for display at your school. Other categories of awards may be determined by the Diversity Committee.

The prominent display of this award will show prospective students that your law school is seriously committed to diversity and will further assist your recruitment efforts directed toward underrepresented candidates. Candidates will read about your commitment to diversity (in your marketing materials and on LSAC.org) and visitors to your school will see your commitment on display. The name of the winning law school will be added to the Diversity Matters plaque displayed at LSAC headquarters in Newtown, Pennsylvania. Previous winners have been featured in local news and other media.
