Diversity Matters events that are taking place in the Midwest are listed below.

Public Events

These events are open to everyone—feel free to attend!

Drake University Law School (Des Moines, IA)

Clark 150 Celebration

Date: September 28, 2018
Time: 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Location: Drake University Law School, Cartwright Hall

In 1868—150 years ago—the Iowa Supreme Court handed down its decision in Clark v. Board of School Directors, which desegregated schools in Iowa—86 years before the US Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education. The author of the opinion was Justice Chester Cole, cofounder of Drake University Law School. High school students from underrepresented groups are invited to attend a daylong symposium to learn about and discuss issues in the areas of justice and equality. Students will be encouraged to consider a legal education since there is still much work to do in these areas.

Washburn University School of Law (Topeka, KS)

Q&A: Queers and Allies Discover the Law

Date: November 17, 2018
Time: 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Location: Washburn University School of Law

This event is geared toward high school and college students with an interest in learning about the current state of the law as it pertains to the LGBTQIA+ community and a desire to explore law as a career option. Interested allies are also welcome to attend.

Presenters will address various issues including same-sex couples and marriage, and name and gender-marker changes. The event will feature a panel of current students who will discuss their law school experience, a tour of the law school, and a presentation on the steps young students can take now to make a career in law a reality.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Room 102 of Washburn Law. Lunch will be provided to those who preregister (by November 9).
